As the industry buzzes about recent lawsuits filed by employers against their carriers,* I think it is important to remind the public that the Federal Employee Health Benefits Program (FEHBP) also uses these same carriers for a substantial number of their 8 million covered lives. With an annual cost of about $60 billion (FY 2021=$59B), it seems that the US Taxpayers could/should be “Plaintiff Number One” in many of these suits. Or, at the very least they should be undertaking the same sort of comprehensive reviews of their carriers’ claims payments and processing to ensure that they are providing proper oversight of their vast health care expenditures.
